This is a fabulous, award-winning Italian red, much in the style of a Super Tuscan. Like a Chianti, it's made mainly from cherry-scented Sangiovese, while a portion of luscious Merlot, key grape of Pomerol, lends sumptuous, velvety plum fruit. The wine is from the Baroncini family who can trace its history in the region back to 1489 when its wine production was noted in the historical archives 'Liber Aetatum'. The rich Antonio di Bastiano Baroncini was the first proprietor of the estate and, as was the custom at that time, passed the property to his daughter Apollonia, who soon married a member of the Medici family, the ultimate social achievement! For more than 500 years now, the property has been handed down the generations to today's owners, Stefano and Bruna Baroncini. Today, the family has a number of small estates within Tuscany - Villa Sovestro close to Siena, one in the coastal region of Maremma, while its main headquarters lie in the ancient town of San Gimignano with its many medieval towers. Rosso di San Gimignano is in fact a new denominazione di origine for the area and the Baroncinis are its most important producer.
